Heritage-Safe Solutions by Cheshire Heritage Blasting

Restore and protect your historic building with expert cleaning and conservation methods approved by Historic England, English Heritage, and trusted conservation professionals.

We are based in Cheshire and cover up to 1.5 hours from Chester, serving areas across North Wales, Shropshire, Wirral, Greater Manchester, and Merseyside. Larger national projects are considered on request.

We offer a complete package of heritage-safe cleaning and removal services using DOFF and ThermaTech superheated steam systems, with Microstripping media blasting available for more challenging coatings or mineral-based paints.

Why Superheated Steam Cleaning – DOFF & Thermatech vs Other Methods

Not all cleaning systems are created equal, especially when working on historic or listed buildings.

πŸ”₯ Why DOFF & ThermaTech?

  • Superheated steam up to 150Β°C, applied at low pressure
  • No harsh chemicals or abrasive force
  • Gently lifts dirt, biological growth, coatings and paint without damaging surfaces
  • Kills spores at root level, preventing regrowth
  • Fast drying, avoiding water absorption that causes frost or salt damage
  • Endorsed by Historic England, English Heritage & conservation architects

⚠️ Why Avoid Pressure Washing, Chemicals or Softwashing?

  • ❌ Pressure washing can erode stone/brick and drive water deep into walls
  • ❌ Chemical cleaning (including acids and solvents) can bleach surfaces and alter breathability
  • ❌ Softwashing often uses sodium hypochlorite (bleach), which is unsuitable for heritage materials
  • ❌ These methods can cause surface loss, discolouration, biological regrowth and environmental damage

🧱 STONE & MASONRY CLEANING

Using DOFF or ThermaTech, we safely clean:

  • 🟒 Algae, moss, lichen and biological growth
  • ⚫ Carbon staining, sulphation, pollution
  • 🧼 General grime and traffic film

Suitable for:

  • Sandstone, limestone, granite, marble, terracotta
  • Churches, listed buildings, boundary walls, detailing

Process:

  • Site survey and material testing
  • Temperature and pressure adjusted for material type
  • Cleaned in uniform sections for consistency
  • Surfaces dry rapidly, avoiding recontamination

🧱 HISTORIC BRICKWORK CLEANING

Historic bricks are often soft and fragile, needing a sensitive approach.

We clean:

  • Handmade and reclaimed brick
  • Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian walls
  • Flemish bond and heritage chimneys
  • Painted or limewashed bricks

Benefits:

  • Preserves glaze and natural surface
  • Prevents frost spalling and saturation
  • Safe for lime mortar

Process:

  • Visual assessment and test patch
  • DOFF or ThermaTech cleaning under controlled pressure
  • Optional salt neutralising treatments
  • Repointing advice available post-clean

🎨PAINT REMOVAL – DOFF / THERMATECH & MICROSTRIPPING

Removing paint from historic substrates requires a tailored, expert process. We remove:

  • Plasticised masonry paints
  • Acrylic, oil-based or lead-based paints
  • Limewash and mineral-based paints (with Microstripping)
  • Tar, bitumen, resin coatings
  • Graffiti and anti-graffiti treatments

How it Works:

  1. Assessment – Identify paint type, thickness, adhesion, substrate
  2. Steam Cleaning – DOFF/ThermaTech used to gently soften and lift layers
  3. Layer-by-layer removal – Multiple passes if needed
  4. Microstripping – For mineral or stubborn paints that steam can’t remove
  5. Final clean – Neutralise residues, rapid drying

Removal Rates (Guide Only):

  • Plasticised paints: 5–10mΒ² per hour
  • Thick/multi-layer coatings: 3–5mΒ² per hour

⚠️ Rates exclude setup/breakdown and depend on material, paint type, access, and finish required.

When Steam Isn’t Enough:

Mineral-based paints chemically bond to substrates – for these, we recommend Microstripping (see: Microstripping Paint Removal)

πŸ›‘οΈ COATING REMOVAL (Tars, Sealants & Paints)

Over the years, many buildings have been coated with unsuitable products. These can:

  • Trap moisture and cause spalling
  • Discolour or degrade unevenly
  • Fail and peel unsightly over time

We remove:

  • Bitumen, tar, resin-based coatings
  • Cementitious and anti-graffiti paints
  • Acrylics, elastomeric layers and old weatherproofing

Process:

  • Coating ID and patch testing
  • DOFF/ThermaTech for soft, degradable coatings
  • Microstripping for hard, mineral-based systems
  • Neutralisation and breathable surface restoration

🧽 RENDER & CLADDING CLEANING

Restore the appearance of your building’s render or cladding without damage.

We clean:

  • Lime render, monocouche, cement render, K-Rend
  • Silicone and acrylic finishes
  • Powder-coated and composite panels
  • Timber and fibre cement cladding

Common Issues:

  • Green/black algae, red biofilms
  • Pollution staining, organic growth
  • Weathering under eaves or downpipes

Why Use Steam?

  • Prevents tiger striping and patchy appearance
  • Doesn’t degrade colour or texture
  • Surface dries fast and resists recontamination
